Since downloading VLC a few days ago, I've been able to play other formats but not Real files (.rm, .ram). Apparently, VLC will play some outdated Real file formats, although I haven't tried any. The VideoLAN Forum indicates that because there is no open source codec for Real Media, there are currently no plans to have VLC support for Real Media files.
Right. Real is a private company and can choose (and have chosen) to make their codecs private. While it may be annoying for us, it's perfectly within their rights to do, and you need to download the free Real Player for OS X if you want to play those files (Microsoft has made a similar choice).
In the future, somebody MAY figure out a way to reverse-engineer Real's codecs and make them playable on other players like VLC for the Mac -- there are apparently some utilities to do this on Windows -- but don't hold your breath waiting.
