Wow! I thought I was the 'master of mean'.... The suggestion was made because the person was trying to help! Berating him like this is unnecessary. GIMP is an option....not necessarily appropriate for this situation but 'still' an option. The Mac user we are discussing is NEW to the Mac and is using a beige G3 (probably not with a lot of upgrades done to it), I still think he would be best served by using OS 9 and some simple graphics app. Somebody has already offered one. I also have Photoshop Elements on CD for OS 9. I'm willing to send it too if the user wants it.
OS X for this user *is* an option and GIMP is a viable option but I really don't think it's appropriate for a beginner to the platform let alone mastering X11.
Let's try to play nice (never thought I'd ever say that).

easy. get him OS X. Install X11. Then download GIMP (GNU Image
Manipulation Project) for free at http://www.gimp.org/

You have seriously GOT to be kidding. From Bryce's description, this guy barely knows how to turn the computer on -- and you're suggesting he use X11 and GIMP??

If the man had a flat tire, would you suggest that he invent his own rubber compound to replace it??

Honestly! That's just a stupid suggestion. On top of all that, GIMP *sucks*. It's strictly for people who don't have any idea what good-quality software is like (or don't care because they're too cheap).

Suggesting people use GIMP instead of Photoshop is like suggesting that you not marry the most beautiful woman on earth, and instead take up with a cheap, STD-infested hooker!

it has all the features of PS, but without the price.

It has SOME of the features of Photoshop, wrapped in ridiculously more-complicated package, and no professional gets within ten miles of it.
