Woke up this morning - the screen is normal again.
It's A Mystery.
Not much of a mystery to me -- your system's video card (or power supply) is STARTING to go. It might be months before it actually does, or days -- but in the absence of outside factors, that's where I'd place my bet.
You should be extremely vigilant about backing up your data from here on out, and saving for a new* machine and/or preparing for warranty service.
*new to YOU, I mean, not necessarily "brand new."
