You ran a firmware update in Panther first without a hitch? I have three G3s (a 450, a 500, and a 600MHz) and have never done that before.

Yes, I ran a firmware update on all my CRT iMacs before installing OS X 10.2, Jaguar, so it wasn't necessary with Panther or Tiger. It's easy to do, especially if you download the firmware update to a bootable OS 9 partition and run it from there.
