When I download something from the net, I get some or all of the following on my desktop:
1. An icon that looks like a drive with the name of the downloaded file under it
This is the mounted disc image from #4. Opening it is like opening a CD or HD; it contains the actual application.
2. An icon with ".sit" on it and the name of the file plus ".sit" under it
This is a Stuffit compressed file. Opening it gives you #3.
3. An icon with ".sit" on it and the name of the file plus ".dmg" and .sit"
under it
This is a Stuffit compressed disk image. Opening it gives you #4.
4. A generic icon with the name of the file plus ".dmg" under it
This is a disk image. Opening it gives you #1
After installing the application, you can unmount #1 and trash number 2. Look at the sizes of the # 3 & 4 files. Save the smallest one on a backup disc in case you ever need to reinstall, and trash the other one.
