Thanks to all those who clued me in on the feverish disk activity under
Tiger. After a "DOH!" moment (post-post, as it were), a simple Google
of "mdimport" revealed all. The thing that WAS surprising was that the
machine had been sleeping when it woke up by itself to do this
indexing, which was invisible except for the flashing of the disk
access light.
