Well, it depends on the updater you use. Use the 2-22-2005 updater, and it will put the latest OS on your iPod. (Click restore).
I just realized that if I just sync the iPod to the kid's iBook, it should wipe out the music library, but leave the updated iPod software intact. Now the question is WILL it; because the iPod has been used and updated with an OS X iMac, but the iBook has 9.2.1 on it.
