I don't know the specifics of it, but in a nutshell I imagine their
software calls back home to Napster to confirm your subscription.
If it expired, it doesn't let you access those files even if they're on
your computer.

Not the best analogy, but think of when you download shareware.  Often
you've pretty much downloaded the full package, but your use of it is
restricted until you send in the registration fee (and receive the key.)
