iTunes is compatible with OS9, you can use version 2. The Music Store
is only available to 4.7.1 and above now, and you can't use AAC files
but mp3 songs play just fine. I still have that installed on my old
PowerBase. And an iPod will work with mp3 files and OS9.
I think the early model Pods will work with OS9, but not with the OP's
233MHz iMac, which has no Firewire.
