Al, I am not confused. My Epson driver really was using the color carts to
print in black (except in Classic, as I noted). I verified this a couple of
different times, for instance once when I had a dried or clogged black cart
and printed blank pages when printing with black ink in Classic, in X it
printed black -- but used the color ink to do it. Moreover I know I am not
alone in this problem, because I have seen a number of other 740 owners
complaining of it in various forums.
Anyway, there was no choice in my print dialog for Print Settings. This had
been the case in all our X installations here. Then today I hooked up my
Pismo (which I use for other things and don't usually print from) to the
740, and was astonished to see one more bar in the rollover with Print
Settings available, and it had a button for choosing black ink!
I tracked down the component that was in the Pismo and not in my iMac: it
was called "SC 740 Plugin" and once I put it in the other systems, they too
have a choice to print with black ink (I had to add the printer again in
the print setup.) Without the plugin, everything else worked, but there was
no Print Settings dialog and no black ink setting.
So mystery is solved and I have Print Settings for my 740, and they all
lived happily ever after.
