Anne,
Have you updated it to 10.4.1 yet? If the menubar is disappearing,
that sounds like the Finder is crashing when it goes down. Try
killing all the Finder pref and plist files(if you haven't already
tried that).

few .plist files in the original user's library and that didn't
seem to help. Can you suggest others to try?
Spotlight (upper RH corner) works fine. It's just when I do
command-F.
Maybe if it weren't 1 am I could figure this out.
(Addendum: No, now it's 6:45, and 5 hours of sleep weren't enough
to clear my brain, so I throw myself on your collective wisdom . . .)
