Wow! This network newbie thanks the three of you for helping me know
how to ask a better question. I still don't grok networking, but
you've helped a lot. What I wanted to know is:
If I add another PM 1000 Mbs to my current 1000 Mbs PM and 100 Mbs
iMac to my Asante FR3004FLC "router", with the PMs be able to talk to
each other at 1000 Mbs with all machines running?
Sort of. The pipe between your 1000Mbps PMs will be 1000Mbps, but if
other computers are talking to one or both of them, those other
computers will eat into that 1000Mbps bandwidth somewhat. To confuse
things even more, ethernet has a practical limit of about 40% of
stated bandwidth, so that 1000Mbps pipe is, in actuality, more like
400Mbps. ;)
FWI: The Asante has 4 ports, a modem connection (now used), a WAN
connection (if we ever get broadband out here), and a parallel
printer port. I talk to the modem via a browser.
As an aside, how would describe the Asante? Switch? Router? Hub?
Bridge?
As you describe your particular device, it performs the functions of
switch, router, and print server. That sort of device is typically
called a "cable/DSL router," which implies all of those networking
functions, but not typically the print server part.

Oh doh! I feel like such an arse! I just looked at the FRONT panel of
the Asante router where it CLEARLY states "100 Mbs". Double doh! NOW
I know why the other routers are so expensive (the ones they call
"switches"). 8^/
So, I assume with the 2 1000 Mbs PMs the rate is limited to 100 Mbs
going through the router? Further that 100 Mbs x 40% efficiency (if
that also applies to 100 Mbs rate?), divided by 8 bits would be 5
MB/sec throughput? That would be a little over 3 GB/minute transfer
speed. What is fast broadband running these days? Must be less than
that?
Again, thanks for your answers Daniel. I'm beginning to understand all
this.
