Hey all,

Crazy question here, but this is my last resort. I read this article here:
http://www.lowendmac.com/woods/02/0322.html

And I NEED to try this (disconnecting the hd and booting from internal CD).
As of now, I have that darn blinking question mark... and yes, I've tried
everything else under the sun. My iMac doesn't respond to booting from a CD
as is. Lemme also mention...
My problems began a few months after upgrading to Panther. I bought the OS
brand new at Comp, and having upgraded to OS 9.2.2 and making sure I had the
latest firmware for my iMac Rev. C, I installed OS X.... all on one
partition (for the record), because I only have a 6gig hd. I would have
never even considered upgrading to OS X, but my freelance work finally
picked up, and I had to use the new Flash software, which required OS X.
Arrg! Well, ARRG!! even more so now, because needless to say, my biz is
deader than ever, now that I have NO MAC!!!
Sooo, back to where I was, to make a long story short, my monitor ended up
going out... not sure if it's the flyback transformer, but thinking it may
be... I don't much about the internals. I tried everything... pressing that
button once on the logic board, replacing the battery... actually, I did the
latter first. I tried a number of things... to no avail.. I bought a monitor
adapter off the internet, but it was reversed as to what I needed... it was
to connect a PC to a Mac Monitor... which is NOT how they described it... so
maybe I'll need that one day, who knows... it was only 10 bucks, so I kept
it. I then went to Fry's Electronics nearby and bought the right adapter
(for $30 bucks!)... after playing with the dip switch numbers, I finally got
my iMac to show up on a PC monitor... Yippee!! Or so I thought!!! That's
when I got the blinking question mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, while the monitor was out, and w/out being able to SEE anything, I
tried some Open Firmware Cmds, as instructed from various web sites...
nothing ever worked..... wonder if I screwed my computer!!??!!!
I can still get into open firmware, but that's all I can do... and I've
tried the reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all... and other things since,
still to no avail.

Will I lose my hd data just by disconnecting it???
Is this easy to do?
Do I have to be grounded?? (don't know how to do that)
Does the logic board have to be removed JUST to disconnect the hd... I don't
want to remove the hd, just disconnect it (as explained in that web site
above).

Thanks!
Tracy
