Hi everybody,

I like the community feel of the list and am glad to see so many
participating in low end mac.

Here's my question, in a few parts.

I have an aging Dev. D Blueberry iMac.

I also have a new brother HL 2040 laser printer that I hope to connect to it once the computer is upgraded to OS 9.x (I'm running the original 8.6
install and need to give the thing some more RAM to accomplish this).
[...]
What isn't clear is that the printer uses something called "USB 2.0".
Because of my computer's age, I feel secure that it must have "USB 1.0".

Yes, the G3 iMacs have USB 1 built in.

Will the (assumed) difference in USB version be an obstacle to
compatibility?

No, however, the printer will not operate at the faster speeds of USB 2. They use the same connection, however.

Another question, as an aside. My iMac has a printer driver,
"Laserwriter 8", that I have heard will run any Postscript Laser you
connect to your machine. Does anyone know if this is appropriate in the
case of this printer? I would love for the ability to get this thing
going without having to go through the hassle of an OS upgrade. OS 8.6
suits my work style, and I would not consider changing it if not for this
printer.

Thanks for your time and help.

You should be able to use the printer with or without OS 9. You could very well try it with the LaserWriter 8 driver - it should work. You could also try installing the software in 8.6 if it will let you. Do so at your own risk, however.

Good luck,
Kyle-
