Hi, all,

I'm about to purchase a notebook/laptop for our church's use and am going to encounter a lot of flak from some members when I tell them it's going to be a Powerbook, so I would appreciate hearing some real-world comparative anecdotes regarding the wisdom of such a move.

First, the background: the church office uses a 1.25GHz eMac SuperDrive (1Gig RAM) running (at the moment) 10.3.9, FileMaker Pro 7, and Office Pro 2004. The pastor's machine is a lesser iMac (800MHz, I think) similarly equipped. These are networked via a D-Link 802.11b router w/4 ports to each other and to a Toshiba color copier/printer. Each computer has an UPS and an 80GB Firewire drive attached for backup.

The primary use for the PB would be to drive a Proxima projector system installed in the sanctuary. This item is capable of 1280 X 1024 resolution at several scan rates and can synch to most video on its inputs, which are D-connector VGA, S-video, and component video. We currently have the unit suspended from the ceiling with cables for the VGA and S-video extended from it.

The horns of my dilemma are these: according to my research into this, a generic PC notebook that can support this kind of resolution from a dedicated-memory graphics controller and that has the other basic PB specs, such as HD capacity, memory (1Gig) and I/O ports, is not quite as expensive up front as the 15" PB.

BUT then there is the software. The basic tools supplied with the PB (incl. iLife) plus Office seem to be all that we need to do the usual PowerPoint stuff, even with video clips. The PC-based notebook, on the other hand, would need not only Office but some other software to do video & sound editiing AND a virus protection subscription, which seems to me to quickly add up to a lot more money (not to mention effort) in the long run.

So any one out there got some good ideas about how to counter the "I coulda got it for you for a lot less" crowd?

Eternally grateful
tater
P.S. I'm sending to this list because it's the one I belong to, and I know a lot of you have experience with the portables as well.
