Unfortunately the only likely alternative, VueScan, doesn't appear to
support the USB version of the 2100:

I've got the same model and contacted UMAX support just after I bought
it to enquire about OSX drivers. At the time they told me:
"Unfortunately the scanner does not work on Mac OS X as of yet but
hopefully we should be releasing new drivers soon. Please keep checking
www.umax.com/support for newer drivers."
About 18 months later I gave up checking and bought an HP. The Umax
software still works in Classic, but compared to the HP version (which,
crucially to me, scans to PDF) it's painful and the GUI's awful.
