I have downloaded the new Backup 3 from .Mac and Apple has increased my iDisk storage but they still seem to say its not big enough for iPhotos or iTunes music. I have about 2,000 iPhotos and 500 songs. I'd like to start a reliable back-up system. It seems that rewriteable DVDs are the best bet. From the Apple support quoted below, it looks like I need Toast in addition to Back-up 3. I have an iPod but I don't see that as a reliable backup device (gets lost, crashes, etc). I am a home user and cost is a factor. Tiger on an iMac G4 flat screen swivel. If I get Toast and backup on DVD-RWs will I be able to play them in my DVD player attached to my TV? Will Toast work with Backup 3?

Hi Tom.

I wrote my own backup system and have been using it since Panther (I now have 1 system on Panther and 1 system on Tiger, and I use the solution for both). My solution uses a system of two LaCie 160GB Firewire hard drives, rotating them out once a week. I keep the backup drive online 24x7 and have a cron job that runs my backup script every night at around 3am. It makes a full backup once a week, and incremental backups every day. I picked up these two drives for $100 each, and I prefer the FW HD solution to a DVD solution because the DVD solution is just too small for my backup needs.

Depending on the size of your backups, and whether you want them to run unattended, you might want to consider a hard-drive based backup solution.
