Hi Julian,
A slot loading machine is better in almost all aspects. First, most
offer DVD reading or CD burning capabilities. Second, they support up
to 1 GB of PC 100 or PC 133 RAM, which is more than the tray loaders
and generally cheaper.
Second, they usually have larger hard drives, although you can upgrade
the hard drive in either one.
They have better graphics support, and faster processor speeds.
Most have FireWire for iPods, digital camcorders, etc.
All Slot Loaders support the latest version of Mac OS X 10.4.
Slot loaders support Airport wireless internet cards (except one model)
Slot loaders have no fan and rely on convection cooling.
Tray loaders are limited to 333MHz speeds, the slot loaders go all the
way up to 700MHz.
Tray loaders are limited to 512MB of RAM, and have less graphics
capability.
Tray loaders are more susceptible to flyback transformer failure -
meaning the iMac won't start up after this part fails.
Both will run Mac OS 9.2, but I would go for the slightly more
expensive slot loader.
