Just sold my Graphite and wiped the HD...wanted to partition for buyer
whos children still need OS 9.2.2 but, when I boot up from the
Panther
Installer disc and choose disk utility...there is no Partition tab!

Okay, two issues here:
1. There is NO NEED to partition the drive just to put OS 9 on it. As
Apple proved for three years when it was shipping dual-boot machines,
OS 9 and OS X live quite happily on the same partition. Unless you
have some STRONG justification for doing so, simply install OS 9 as
normal (be sure to update firmware, update to 9.2.2 and generally
install everything Software Update wants you to), then install OS X.
Done.
2. Should you INSIST on partitioning, Peter's advice is mistaken. At
no point in the install process will you be asked if you want to
partition the drive, or offered the chance to do so. You must instead
start from the install CD, and IGNORE the opening dialog box and head
to the menubar to activate "Disk Utility." Open that program and
partition the drive to your heart's content, then return to the
install process and proceed as you desire. Again, this is just extra,
unnecessary work, but it's your machine -- do what you want.
