I sent this around on various lists, but, for iMac
purposes, I am looking for prices on used iMac's that
would run at least at 400 and have 512 ram. Anybosy
wanna break down the whole range, that would be
excellent.
Is there some reason you are not considering G4 Macs? New or
refurbed, G4 Macs are relatively cheap, extremely well-made and
highly regarded -- not to mention thoroughly "modern" by internet and
consumer software standards.
Refurb'd eMacs can be found for around $500-600, new and refurb'd Mac
minis start at under $400 (you'll need your own monitor and keyboard,
but you likely have these things lying around!), and refurb'd "dome"
iMac G4s seem to be going for under $500 unless they're quite kitted
out. iBooks are of course a bit more expensive, but I love mine.
All of the above take the Airport Extreme card (if they don't already
have it on board), most come with 512MB of RAM and can usually be
easily and inexpensively doubled, and all of which come with FAR more
HD space than you spec'd (and all are expandable in that dept thanks
to Firewire and USB2). The convenience of having those ports will
save you a lot more time and money in the long run than trying to
make a tired old G3 do ever-increasing duty.
I am not too concerned if this turns out to be a Beige
G3, a B+W, or an iMac. But how do I price these things
out? For example:
a barebones B+W should be no more than x
a 256 ram/20 gig HD/no combo == x
an early imac == x
a Beige all upgraded so I can use it as a wireless net
station should be x?
Adding up everthing you'd need to make one of these early models
really work well would take you well BEYOND the cost of the options I
mentioned above. Heck, the original Aiport card for the models you
mentioned (assuming they can take them at all) will cost you around
$150 *by itself.*
Something to consider.
Cheers
Chas
