I want to change my wired network over to wireless. I currently
have an eMac
running Tiger and a PC running Windows 2000 & XP and a wired router
to share a
cable broadband modem.
My eMac will take an Airport Express card and presumably a Airport
Extreme Base
Station, and I have a few questions...
With the Airport Extreme card installed can I connect to any
Wireless mac
compatible router or does it have to be an Airport Base Station?
Any router, though the Airport does offer some advantages (native
Appletalk support, for example, probably not that important but it's
vital to some people). A router does not have to be "mac compatible,"
it only has to be configurable via a web browser.
Can the PC wirelessly connect to an Airport Base Station?
Yes.
Can I use an Airport Base Station (which is b) on an eMac running
Airport Extreme
(which is g)?
Yes.
With the PC and Mac connected wirelessly to the base station would
I be able to
plug in a third machine via ethernet?
Yes, if you get the regular Airport Base Station, which has a "spare"
ethernet port. The Airport Express does not have this (or a phone
modem, for that matter).
TIP: Use 128-bit WEP encryption for the best compatbility, unless you
have an OS 9 machine in the mix -- they can't handle 128-bit. Use 40-
bit if OS 9 machines are part of the network.

Claiming that the Macintosh is inferior to Windows because most
people use Windows is like saying that all other restaurants are
inferior to McDonald's.
