From: Nerris Markogiannis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> IDear All, I have an eMac G4 1.23GHz and I am new with apple computers.
There's a very good book called "Switching to the Mac" by David Pogue you can pick up cheaply from Amazon or your local booksellers. Well worth the investment if you're a refugee from the PC world.
At the moment I have 256 MB Ram and I want to find out if I can put 2 GB,
According to Low End Mac, the fine sponsors of this list, your eMac model (I assume you meant to type "1.25GHz") does indeed support up to 2GB of RAM using two 1GB PC2700 DDR SDRAM sticks. Be aware that this means removing and discarding (or selling/giving/etc) your "original" RAM stick, which is sitting in one of those two slots right now.
and also does anybody know where does the memory go?
It goes in the user access door on the bottom of the machine. "Roll" the eMac gently so that it's screen is sitting on a soft cloth (a doubled-up towel is good for this purpose) and unscrew the user access panel. The two RAM slots are immediately visible. Remember to make sure they are firmly seated (they should "click" into place) before sealing it up, turning it back upright and turning it on. If you don't hear a chime or hear a long tone, that means you didn't get the memory in there correctly. If you hear the usual chime, wait for it to finish booting up and then select "About this Mac" from the Apple Menu. It should say you have 2GB of RAM.
Can you recomend a shop where I can buy the memory at a reasonable price?
I usually check dealram.com for this sort of thing, and a quick check reveals that maxing out the RAM (ie two 1GB sticks) will cost you approximately $162 from 1-800-4-MEMORY (aka Coast to Coast Memory), a dealer I have had no bad experiences with over the years. You might decide to just go with one stick at around $80 from the same vendor. If you're using the machine in a fairly typical way (mostly web surfing and email with a few basic games or other basic applications like Word or Quicken), then 1GB is probably more than enough for your needs. If you're doing something more elaborate and/or can afford to do so, then go for the 2GB if you think you need it.
