(I have Tiger) In the classic menu in System Preferences, there's an option 
"Show Classic status in menu bar" / I don't know if it's available in older 
versions of OS X - it's been too long since I used classic for me to know (or 
care ;o) )

Perhaps someone with Jaguar can confirm whether this option is available to 
them (I suspect that it is).
