Had a somewhat similar problem a couple of years ago with a cd burner. The
profiler could see it, but Toast couldn't. This was in OS X.

Finally took it out of the case and compared the jumpers with a drive that worked fine. Moved the jumpers to match those of the working drive and off
she went. Can't remember now, but I probably had to set it to Master.

Worth a look perhaps.
