This isn't iMac but close - I got a G4 dual 1.25 for my audio work, and
CCC'd my iBook drive to a 120G Seagate, installed the Seagate in the G4
and almost everything worked fine (I am not ready to tackle tiger which
came on the refurbed G4) I would start up from the old drive, and try
to restore to the new one - after CCCing the new drive just in case!
We may do the same thing to the new iMac DVSE we got for my partner's
typing, so it would be good to knwo what you final outcome is...
