Lou:

If you really want to go back to OS 9 I have installation CD's that I'd happily give you. I have no use for them as I use 10.4.3 on ALL of MY MACS. Actually most of my Macs won't even boot OS 9. Why you'd wish to live in the past and run an OS that will be officially dead (although it's not supported anymore by Apple--sort of makes it dead now) as of January 11th is beyond me. And in reply to the poster that you replied to there is a little app called, strangely enough, Windowshades on www.unsantiy.com that you can download for a nominal price and you'll have that functionality back. OS X is a great Operating System. 10.3 was good, 10.4 is amazing. I have it running on a G3 Blue & White 450 and it flies! It boots in less than 35 seconds from startup chime to usable desktop. So, don't generalize like you do below and say things like "but do not go to 10.4 as everything you hate about the mew UNIX Macs is worse."....you are so wrong. I also have it running on a G3 Indigo iMac 400 and it runs just as fast. Of course I did max out the RAM on each and upgraded the hard drives. The iMac came with a 9 gig hard drive....it now has an 80 gig and 512 RAM and Airport. The Blue and White has 1 gig RAM and 2 120 gig hard drives and a PCI card from Sonnet that allows it to have Airport also. All of you people who sit and complain about the limitations are so blind. Have you even tried to do a search as to upgrades? Older Macs are SO upgradeable. If I wanted to, I could even upgrade the processor on the Blue & White to a 1 gig G4...but I don't see the need as it's quite fast and I don't use it as my main computer. If I did, I'd certainly do the processor upgrade. The video card is upgradable also......and, just for kicks, if I still wanted to run OS 9 on it, I still can. Only problem there is I lose my Airport ability as the card isn't supported by stupid old OS 9. Stop living in the past.....upgrade, you'll be glad you did. That is the entire purpose of this website and email list--to get the MOST out of your older systems and I just described several ways to do that. Oh, same things can be done for the G3 Beige Systems. UPGRADE and come to OS X.

Am I behind the times with old stuff, or does the brightest and newest of Macs offerings still have this problem. (I am using Mac OSX, version 10.3.7)

You may enjoy moving up to 10.3.9, as it does everything a bit better (really!) but do not go to 10.4 as everything you hate about the mew UNIX Macs is worse.

Solution: Go back to OS9.1! I wish I could but new computer programs will not work on it. Or keep the old one and give up new things - that would be cheaper too!

Why they have ro make computers look like catoons and animated toys is far beyond me. I'm over fifty and appreciate subtle elegance, not garish seethru plastic junk.. And the gall they have to not even allow us to have a choice!

I will stop before i rant, with this last comment: Why O why do people who sell used computers think they have to put the newest fake-O operating system on old Macs? I put a new drive in my G4 so I could at least stay with 10.3.9...

I miss window shades. Actually, if stuff would
stay where I put it, I'd like to have both the window shades feature and the dock.
Each offers something the other does not.

Anyone have a solution for this nuisance factor?
