If you've eliminated the drives, then the next thing to do is substitute known quiet PAV boards for the original until you get to the noisy board. But that's a lot of work, so first try to find the noise.

Yes, I've eliminated the drives and will have to inspect the electronic parts on the PAV board. I assume these can be replaced rather easily? Thanks for the cautionary tips for electric safety.

Bob

The replacement process isn't difficult, just time-consuming. Whether it's your first or your xxxth, it's just a tedious task that doesn't respond well to speeding it up.

But first, get a copy of the appropriate Apple Service Manual and Video Adjustment Utility for your machine. (These are available a lot of places, all of them safely out of the reach of Apple's lawyers, who don't like their copyrighted material -- even for no longer supported Apple products -- to be available in public.) These official how-to-do-its will tell you all you need to know, including proper safety procedures. The only thing I had to obtain to do PAV replacements was the jumper cable needed to make permanent adjustments in the color and geometry panels when replacing the PAV boards. I just made one up out of some heavy wire and wire connectors. A light meter would be nice, but I've managed to learn how to adjust CRT displays satisfactorily without one.

HTH and good luck!

Jim
