Charles Martin Said: "Given that Apple has NO INTENTION OF EVER RELEASING A
MAC ON X86, perhaps I've identified where your trouble lies."

Did I freaking miss something. Last time I checked there ARE TWO MACS on X86
INTEL ARCHITECTURES CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET.

Dear Richard:

You missed something. Somehow, and I really can't imagine how, but somehow you missed the fact that both of the announced Intel Macs (and all future Intel Macs) use Intel chips that ARE NOT PART OF THE X86 FAMILY.

Intel /= X86. Grasp that first.

Once you've got that, understand that referring to Core Duo (and similar) chips as "x86" is exactly akin to referring to the G5 as "68070."

It's not the same family. It's not even the same technology.

The last chip Intel produced that actually ended in "86" was the 80486 in 1991, however it is widely held that the Pentium class of chips are also part of the "x86" family, and their similar layout and fabrication techniques would support that argument.

Starting with the ill-fated Itanium, however, Intel has moved VERY far beyond the x86 class, and current Intel chips (both 64-bit and 32- bit) can no longer be considered part of the x86 family. No Intel product I'm aware of has been referred to by Intel as an x86-class processor for many years now. The term itself is obsolete and antiquated, hardly the image Intel wants to project for their new chips I should think.

And STEVE has said that by
YEARS END ALL MACS WILL BE ON X86 INTEL PROCESSORS.

This is flat out not true. Steve has said that future Macs will be running on Intel processors but AT NO TIME has he EVER said that they would be "x86" (or anything like that) processors. The only Macs that have ever publicly run on x86-class processors were the developer- only Pentium-based machines.

You don't, of course, have to take my word on this -- here's Intel's own webpage on Core Duo:

http://www.intel.com/products/processor/coreduo/index.htm

Please point out to me the reference to x86, or its official Intel x86 family number (ie, if the Pentium was a 586, that makes the Core Duo a [blank]86).

Good luck with that.

Cheers
Chas
