try hooking your computer up to another computer that has a dvd drive. you
can target the machine and then it will think your's is just an external
drive and you go thru the normal install procedure, but choose 'your
machine' instead of the one that has the dvd drive. it will work just fine.

Different person here, but I just installed Tiger from CDs on a 350mHz SL
with no firewire. I'd expected to have lots of problems but it went just
as easily as any other OS install. I did the Upgrade option from 10.3.9 to
10.4. Surprised the heck out of me, and made me ecstatic I hadn't gone
through all the hoops I'd been expecting.
