Greetings, all.
I have finally determined the cause of my iMac's woes: the hard drive
died. I went through all of the troubleshooting steps in the service
manual, and nothing really seemed wrong with it. The really weird
part is that the one time I got it booted, the hard disk passed Apple
Hardware Test.
Anyway, today I cracked it open and unplugged the HD and DVD-ROM. I
put my laptop into target disk mode, and connected the two machines
with a firewire cable. The iMac booted from the laptop - no
problem. Then I reversed it: I pulled the HD out of the iMac and put
it in a firewire enclosure and connected that to the laptop... Disk
Utility reports that the drive has problems and cannot mount.
Unfortunately because of the nature of the problem, DiskWarrior
cannot fix it. Still, I'm glad to know what the problem is, and in a
few days I should have a fully operational machine once again... this
time with 1GB of RAM, since I'm going to take the opportunity to
upgrade the internal RAM.
BTW, for those who asked, getting in and getting it back together was
pretty easy - just take your time, don't force anything, and make
sure you put everything back correctly.
Daniel
