I assume that you are looking for a desktop publishing program.

Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress are the gold standards, but expensive
and difficult to learn.

Apple's own Pages, part of iWork, would be a great alternative.

Two programs in between in price and capability would be Diwan's
Ready, Set, Go! and Stone Design's Create.

Finally, there are the open source (free!) Scribus and Aqua Scribus
( www.scribus.net ). The price is right but the programs have
problems.

www.versiontracker.com is the best listing of Mac programs, but their
search engine sucks. Due to their terrible classifications system, you
really have to work to be sure you have found all the possible
alternatives. Hint: Search on the above programs' names and not by
classification.

p.s. Most publishing and printing professionals would not use the
words "viable" and "equivalent to MS Publisher" in the same sentence.
