I figure that this is a good time to interject MS FolderShare. For the anti MS bigot purists, please keep in mind the bought a pre-existing product and rebraned it. Anyway, it is a personal P2P technology that runs on Win32 and Mac OS X platforms. If any member of the personal network can reach another without crossing a firewall, it uses its builtin protocl to sync between n folders. If one member cant be reached, it uses one of the FolderShare servers to bridge an HTTP connection between the points (so it can pass thru firewalls and domain policy rulesets). It's very simple to setup and use.
I created a "group" networkbetween my home machine work machine, wife's laptop, brothers machine. If any of us drags a file into our "group" folder, all the others get the file when they refresh the folder. I created a "private" folder between my work and home. If Im coding something and need to continue at home, I just drag it to the private folder and it force-syncs to my home machine so the files are there when I get home. So..... For backup media, spend a few bucks on a cheap Mac (or PC), set up a private Foldershare volume, and leave it at a friend/faily member's house. Backup what you want on your local disk andlet FS do the rest. If the drive on the remote machine is external USB (think $50 for ~320gb these days), when you really need it you can just get the device and you're set. FolderShare is free, closed-source. If you're on this e'list, chances are (1) you have fast internet and (2) know someone else with fast ethernet that can host for you, so FolderShare is a great option for offste backup. -----Original Message----- From: Simon Royal <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 11:02 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Backup Medium Advice Hi Try GetDropBox. It creates a watched folder on your hard drive and updates everytime you make a change to it. Very good and 2GB is free.
