I had something like this happen a while ago, but it was both
speakers. It would distort into a buzzing sound when the volume
reached a high level.

Curiously, it went away when I rebuilt my system folder. I think it
could have been a partially corrupted sound driver or some setting
that got mucked up.

Does it do it when you plug in external speakers?
