Hi Gerry,

A couple of thoughts.  Have you tried booting into Safe mode to see if  
you can rename files in the finder?  This would help determine if the  
problem is related to third party extensions.  How about trying a  
different user account?  This will help determine if the problem is  
user specific.

Looks like Stuffit  AVR may be causing similar issues if you have it  
installed.  Hope this helps.
