I appreciate the help this group offered to my question, but wound up calling Apple Support. Just wanted to share this memo I made to myself after getting the problem I posed to this group a week ago fixed by calling Apple Support.
LaserWriter 16/600 Reset Problem: LaserWriter 16/600 was connected at my office (where I have lots of OS 9.2.2 and a few OS X computers) in Ethernet network used by iMac flat panel running OS 10.4.11 but not the new MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.6. even though both computers and the LaserWriter 16/600 are connected to the same hub and the MacBook Pro had recognized the LaserWriter 16/600 and could use other inkjet printers at my home. The LaserWriter 16/600 was constantly in Standby. When told to resume printing items in queue the LaserWriter 16/600 would briefly go into “in use” state and then go back to standby, adding the last item to be printed to the print queue. Diagnosis by at Apple Support: Need to reset the LaserWriter 16/600 in MacBook Pro. Solution: (Which will delete all items in LaserWriter 16/600 print queue) 1. Open the MacBook Pro System Preferences from the Dock. 2. Select Print & Fax. 3. In the Print & Fax dialog box that opens, there is a white box at the left side containing a list of Printers. Select the LaserWriter 16/600 in that list. 4. Click the Plus (+) sign below that white box. 5. A box opens with a list of printers. Select in that list the LaserWriter 16/600. 6. Click the “Add” button in the lower right corner of that dialog box. 7. It returns you to the Print & Fax dialog box. If the LaserWriter 16/600 is being shared with other computers, click the box stating “share this printer.” 8. Close the Print & Fax dialog box. 9. Note you don’t have the other printers in the printer list you had before but they will be added when you connect them (which I'll try back home). 10. Print queue now will say the LaserWriter 16/600 is “printer ready.” 11. Test print a document to verify it works. Being able to print on my office LaserWriter 16/600 after weeks of frustration made me so happy I had to share this with my Mac OS 9 friends who daily share their ideas with me.
