No you don't. All my systems are set to boot in verbose mode, and if I  
get a kernel panic, it's just the gray screen with the multilanguage  
'please restart your computer'.

Apple USED to just dump the console all over the screen in a KP in  
early versions of OS X, but I forget when they changed, I think it was  
10.3, it may have been 10.2.
