In iPhoto's prefs you can designate where your photo library is;  
however, iPhoto will STILL suck all your photos into it's directory  
structure.

Like iTunes, iPhoto is designed to manage your photos. Let it. You  
will waste time, effort and disk space fighting it.

Your best solution is to move your iPhoto library to the external  
disk, import your photos and delete or archive the existing photos on  
the external disk.
