Resolved: Installing http://buymelunch.org/printing/usbtb/ and
pointing to this new driver from the mac side resolved the printer
error...

Installing Bonjour enabled the same printer to work from the Windows
side using vmware on the imac.  You can download Bonjour from this
link.

http://support.apple.com/downloads/Bonjour_for_Windows

Hope this helps anyone with the same problems.
