"works fine" -- each stick stand-alone in each slot gives you a 
proper BONG when you boot?

No BONG = self-test failed badly.  If you can force-boot the machine 
thereafter, be careful.  Whatever it is that caused the self-test to 
fail will bite you eventually.  Random kernel panics, data 
corruptions, etc.

Make sure the sticks are properly seated.  Sometimes, when putting in 
multiple sticks, this is more difficult than normal...
