Yes, you can get low profile slot load DVD drive thingies. They are
quite popular for media centers and some laptops use them as well.
But, you are going to run into connector problems and will end up
building a custom cable (correct me if I'm wrong). This will be on top
of the aligning to the drive cage and case slot issues. Nor are they
particularly cheap.

It can be done, but practically speaking, you are better off using a
drive pulled from a PowerBook.
