Personally, I use an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid for capture, and then export
to iMovie HD for editing.

You can get the early models of the EyeTV Hybrid that don't tune
digital channels quite cheaply on eBay. For capturing from a VCR,
they're just as good as the current model, at 1/3 the price.  If you
go that route, make sure you get the custom cables that came with it!
