I thought you were ejecting it FROM the desktop. :)

I think I had one machine do that a long time ago.  It's probably some 
mechanical part NOT restraining things as it should.  I never much 
worked with G5 iMacs but did work on plenty of Intel iMacs and they 
always ejected the disk normally.  Maybe you need a padded catcher 
bucket for this one.
