Yup, sounds like trouble in the making. You probably have some
corruption in your system. Here's a list of the basic system restore
steps, one of these should help. Just go through the list until the
problem clears up.

  - Restart (I assume you've tried this, but it never hurts to
reiterate it)
  - Run a Disk, and Permissions check in Disk Utility. (Located under
[your HD]>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility)
  - Reset the Pram (Hold Option, Apple, R and P at startup) and
NVram. (Hold Option, Apple, O and F at startup, then when prompted
type reset-nvram)
  - Boot into single-user mode, and run a file system check (Hold
Apple and S at startup, when prompted, type, fsck -f) And wait a
while, because sometimes it seems like it gets stuck, but it's still
working on it. If it comes back and says No files were modified, then
there wasn't anything that it found wrong, or couldn't fix. In that
case, try going further:
  - Create a new user, see if the problems persist in the new account.
  - Buy 10.4 install disks on eBay, and perform an archive and
install, preserving user data.
  - Archive and install without preserving users, then copy your data
back manually. (Skipping the user Library, as at this point this is
probably what's corrupted)
  - Back up your data, reformat your hard drive, and reinstall 10.4
fresh.

You probably won't have to go through this whole list, but it depends
on how deeply your system's problems are. If you have any questions,
or get stuck, feel free to ask, one of us here on the iMacs list can
help :)
Let us know how it goes, and if you're able to fix the problem.
