That's very strange... Was it set up with the music library on the  
external drive? You might try pointing it to the library again. (Or  
pointing it to the system library, then back to the external one, to  
in essence "reset" it)

And yes, there is a way to import them all from her external drive.  
 From the File menu, choose "Add to Library..." then navigate to the  
folder enclosing all the music (Even if it's all in separate folders  
within that folder) and add them. It'll take a while to copy them into  
the music library if there's a lot, but then they'll all be there, and  
you don't have to import them one at a time.
