Hmm, that's very strange.. Try plugging in the HD when your iMac is
on, and see if it shows up. You could try to plug it into another
computer and see if it does the same thing.
Have you tried running the disk check with Disk Utility? If it comes
up with some error you might just have a bad HD.
I've never encountered that error before; (except with network
errors). Have you tried googling it? Perhaps others have had that
problem.
