Is that the slot-loader iMac you're talking about? They're actually  
pretty easy to open up. Here's a step-by-step
1. Open the RAM panel, using a flathead screwdriver.
2. Unscrew the two screws under the RAM panel.
3. Unscrew the two screws next to the hinges.
4. Lift off the bottom plastic part.
5. Unscrew the 6 screws from around the metal shield, be careful not  
to drop them down inside the iMac, you'll probably never see them  
again... And lift the metal shield up.
And you now have access to the inside.
