Hi folks,

I have here an Intel iMac (20", early 2006) that appeared to be
working normally, except that reportedly sometimes it took a long while
of black screen to wake from sleep. I attempted to upgrade the RAM from
512 to 2G (known good RAM that works fine in another of the same
machine). After I did that it would not power on at all - no light, no
noise, nothing. I went back to the original RAM, it still would not
power on until a lot of unplugged time had passed, and now it starts or
won't start intermittently: if it starts normally it seems happy to
restart after that, but once it won't start it seems to want to be left
unplugged for a while or it won't start later. Also if I do anything
with the RAM (try to add another chip, move the existing chip to a
different slot, etc.) it won't start for quite a while after that. The
512 appears to be recognized in either slot, once I get the iMac started
up, but so far I haven't had any luck booting it after installing a
second chip - but of course as with all intermittent issues I am not
certain if it might at some point.

So, my question before I go about replacing the power supply: is
there anything that could cause this issue besides a faulty power
supply, especially any type of logic board failure that could cause
this? (It looks to me like it would be worth replacing the power supply,
but if there is a problem with the logic board that probably would not
be worth replacing.)

TIA,

Beverly
