Mia It could be incompatible RAM.
This happens in the black PowerBook G3 range, some RAM (high density or low density, I can never remember which) will only be detected at half its actually rate, something to do with the number of chips. With the PowerBooks you need sticks with chips on both sides. Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks there.
