It seems that your difficulty is only incidental, and not relevant, to  
the fact that you happen to conduct your project on an iMac.  I  
believe that you would have encountered the same situation with any  
other Mac.

With respect to Weather Tracker, you are serving as a beta tester for  
an unfinished product, whose company is not responsive to your  
communications.

As for the Oregon Scientific WMR968 Weather Station, you may wish to  
read the Amazon Customer Reviews about it:

You did not identify the "serial/usb adapter" that you bought for the  
project.  Such devices are known to be problematic under Mac OS X.  I  
have had good experience with several old Keyspan adapters.  The  
current model USA-19HS is marketed by TrippLite:
