Is the hub powered, and what else is plugged into the hub, these can be a major factor in weather it crashes the controller or not. In my personal expierence, my G3 350mhz iMac has no problem with 2 hubs inline, plus a USB Wifi, 2 flash disks, a non-apple keyboard, a lighted hub, and an external hdd. (Granted, the G3 iMacs have dual controllers, one per port, which means that it isn't sharing power over many ports (Like my main desktop which shares power over 10 different ports (I ended up using my monitor's hub for USB powered high-draw devices, and FireWire for External HDDS.)
